Over de bestemming: Chicago, ooit een kleine handelspost aan Lake Michigan, is uitgegroeid tot een van de beroemdste steden van het land. Geen Chicago-tour is compleet zonder het nachtleven te noemen, dus sluit je dag af in een jazzclub en laat je meevoeren door de heerlijke klanken van de muziek.

De stad werd opgericht in 1819; het werd een administratief centrum in 1823 en ontving zijn fuero in 1840. Het werd de hoofdstad van Illinois in 1837. De wetgevende vergadering werd hier voor het eerst bijeengeroepen in 1839. Volgens de volkstelling van 2010 wonen er 111.454 inwoners in de stad. Oorspronkelijk werd de stad rond 1810 Calhoun genoemd, naar de senator van South Carolina, John C. Calhoun, maar nadat de bevolking was ontward met Calhoun, werd de stad hernoemd naar Springfield. Abraham Lincoln is een van de belangrijkste en prominentste inwoners van de stad; verhuisde naar het gebied in 1831, maar woonde pas in 1837 in de stad zelf. Ook de Amerikaanse president Ulysses S. Grant onderhield banden met Springfield.
